Patient Eligibility

Qualifying Medical Conditions

As provided by Florida’s Amendment 2, patients are eligible to receive a certification for low-THC cannabis or medical marijuana if they suffer from the following medical conditions

  • ALS
  • Cancer
  • Chronic muscle spasms
  • Chronic nonmalignant pain
  • Crohn’s Disease
  • Epilepsy/Seizures Disorders
  • Glaucoma
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
  • PTSD (Post-traumatic stress disorder)
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Are there any other diagnosable conditions that qualify?
ALS

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as ALS and Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a neurodegenerative disease where damage to the neurons of the motor-system leads to progressive weakening and waste of muscle tissue.

Cancer

Disease caused by an uncontrolled division of abnormal cells in a given part of the body

Chronic muscle spasms

A muscle spasm is a sudden, involuntary movement in one or more muscles. People may also call it a charley horse or a muscle cramp or twitch.

These movements can happen in any muscle of the body, and they are very common. Muscle spasms often occur as a result of stress, exercise, or dehydration.

Chronic nonmalignant pain

While acute pain comes and goes, chronic pain is a condition that remains over a long period of time. As a result, it can have a tremendous impact on quality of life.  Pain signals keep firing in the nervous system for weeks, months, even years.

There may have been an initial injury, but some people suffer chronic pain in the absence of any past injury or evidence of body damage.

Crohn’s Disease

Crohn’s Disease is known to be an inflammatory bowel disease. This disease leads to chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract and numerous life-altering symptoms.

Fortunately, Crohn’s Disease has been added to the list of qualifying conditions for Medical Marijuana in Florida, with hundreds of patients experiencing symptom relief through medical cannabis.

Epilepsy/Seizures Disorders
A disorder in which nerve cell activity in the brain is disturbed, causing seizures. Epilepsy may occur as a result of a genetic disorder or an acquired brain injury, such as a trauma or stroke.
During a seizure, a person experiences abnormal behavior, symptoms, and sensations, sometimes including loss of consciousness. There are few symptoms between seizures.
Glaucoma

Eye conditions marked by increase intraocular pressure that can cause blindness.

Glaucoma is a condition that causes damage to the optic nerve, which is responsible for carrying visual information from the eye to the brain. It comes in many different forms and often develops from increased pressure within the eye. This pressure may damage the optic nerve, leading to vision loss and even blindness.

HIV/AIDS
HIV causes AIDS and interferes with the body’s ability to fight infections.
The virus can be transmitted through contact with infected blood, semen, or vaginal fluids. Within a few weeks of HIV infection, flu-like symptoms such as fever, sore throat, and fatigue can occur.
Then the disease is usually asymptomatic until it progresses to AIDS. AIDS symptoms include weight loss, fever or night sweats, fatigue, and recurrent infections.
Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

A disease in which the immune system eats away at the protective covering of nerves.

Multiple Sclerosis, or MS, is a process involving the immune system where an abnormal response by the immune system of the body is directed against the nervous system. The central nervous system, which is most impacted by MS, consists of one’s brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves.

The abnormal response by the immune system leads to inflammation that damages the system’s myelin, the nerve fibers, and the cells which produce myelin.

PTSD (Post-traumatic stress disorder)

A disorder in which a person has difficulty recovering after experiencing or witnessing a terrifying event.

Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s is a disease impacting the nerve cells within the brain, leading to muscle rigidity, tremors, and over time, decline in speech, gait, and motor skills.

Are there any other diagnosable conditions that qualify?

While the above listed conditions automatically qualify a patient, below is a non-exhaustive list of other diagnosable conditions that may qualify a patient for medical marijuana recommendation under Florida low.

  • Anxiety
Anxiety is a feeling of fear, dread, and uneasiness. It might cause you to sweat, feel restless and tense, and have a rapid heartbeat. It can be a normal reaction to stress. For example, you might feel anxious when faced with a difficult problem at work, before taking a test, or before making an important decision

  • Degenerative Disc Disorder
Osteoarthritis of the spine, usually in the neck or lower back.
This is a condition of the discs between vertebrae with loss of cushioning, fragmentation and herniation related to aging.
  • Diabetic Neuropathy
Diabetic neuropathy is nerve damage that can occur in people with diabetes. Different types of nerve damage cause different symptoms. Symptoms can range from pain and numbness in your feet to problems with the functions of your internal organs, such as your heart and bladder.
  • Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia (fi·bro·my·al·gi·a) is a condition that causes pain all over the body (also referred to as widespread pain), sleep problems, fatigue, and often emotional and mental distress. People with fibromyalgia may be more sensitive to pain than people without fibromyalgia.
  • Hepatitis C
An infection caused by a virus that attacks the liver and leads to inflammation.
The virus is spread by contact with contaminated blood, for example, from sharing needles or from unsterile tattoo equipment.
  • Herniated Discs
A herniated disc (also called bulged, slipped or ruptured) is a fragment of the disc nucleus that is pushed out of the annulus, into the spinal canal through a tear or rupture in the annulus. Discs that become herniated usually are in an early stage of degeneration
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a group of symptoms that occur together, including repeated pain in your abdomen and changes in your bowel movements, which may be diarrhea, constipation, or both. With IBS, you have these symptoms without any visible signs of damage or disease in your digestive tract.
  • Lupus
Lupus is a disease that occurs when your body’s immune system attacks your own tissues and organs (autoimmune disease). Inflammation caused by lupus can affect many different body systems — including your joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, brain, heart and
  • Lyme Disease
Lyme disease is a bacterial infection you get from the bite of an infected tick. At first, Lyme disease usually causes symptoms such as a rash, fever, headache, and fatigue. But if it is not treated early, the infection can spread to your joints, heart, and nervous system. Prompt treatment can help you recover quickly.
  • Migraines
Migraines are a recurring type of headache. They cause moderate to severe pain that is throbbing or pulsing. The pain is often on one side of your head. You may also have other symptoms, such as nausea and weakness. You may be sensitive to light and sound.
  • Muscular Dystrophy
Muscular dystrophy is a group of diseases that cause progressive weakness and loss of muscle mass. In muscular dystrophy, abnormal genes (mutations) interfere with the production of proteins needed to form healthy muscle. There are many kinds of muscular dystrophy
  • Myasthenia Gravis
Myasthenia gravis is a chronic autoimmune, neuromuscular disease that causes weakness in the skeletal muscles that worsens after periods of activity and improves after periods of rest. These muscles are responsible for functions involving breathing and moving parts of the body, including the arms and legs
  • Myositis
Myositis is a rare group of diseases characterized by inflamed muscles, which can cause prolonged muscle fatigue and weakness. The group includes the autoimmune disorders juvenile myositis, dermatomyositis and polymyositis, as well as inclusion body myositis (IBM).
  • Neuropathy
Neuropathy is damage or dysfunction of one or more nerves that typically results in numbness, tingling, muscle weakness and pain in the affected area. Neuropathies frequently start in your hands and feet, but other parts of your body can be affected too
  • Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, affecting millions of people worldwide. It occurs when the protective cartilage that cushions the ends of the bones wears down over time. Although osteoarthritis can damage any joint, the disorder most commonly affects joints in your hands, knees, hips and spine.
  • Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis causes bones to become weak and brittle — so brittle that a fall or even mild stresses such as bending over or coughing can cause a fracture. Osteoporosis-related fractures most commonly occur in the hip, wrist or spine. Bone is living tissue that is constantly being broken down and replaced.
  • Peripheral Vascular Disease
Peripheral vascular disease (PVD) is a slow and progressive circulation disorder. Narrowing, blockage, or spasms in a blood vessel can cause PVD. PVD may affect any blood vessel outside of the heart including the arteries, veins, or lymphatic vessels.
  • Polymyalgia Rheumatica
Polymyalgia rheumatica is an inflammatory disorder that causes muscle pain and stiffness, especially in the shoulders and hips.
  • Post-Polio Syndrome
Post-polio syndrome (PPS) is a disorder of the nerves and muscles. It happens in some people many years after they have had polio. PPS may cause new muscle weakness that gets worse over time, pain in the muscles and joints, and tiredness. People with PPS often feel exhausted.
  • Psychiatric Conditions
Some of the most common psychiatric conditions include depression, PTSD/PTSS, anxiety, schizophrenia, and addiction
  • Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy
Reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome (RSD) is a disorder that causes lasting pain, usually in an arm or leg, and it shows up after an injury, stroke, or even heart attack. But the severity of pain is typically worse than the original injury itself.

Sickle cell anemia is one of a group of inherited disorders known as sickle cell disease. It affects the shape of red blood cells, which carry oxygen to all parts of the body
  • Scoliosis
Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine that most often is diagnosed in adolescents. Scoliosis occurs most often during the growth spurt just before puberty.
Most cases are mild with few symptoms. Some children develop spine deformities that get more severe as they grow. Severe scoliosis can be painful and disabling.
Often, no treatment is necessary. Sometimes a brace or surgery is needed.
  • Spasticity
Spasticity is a condition in which there is an abnormal increase in muscle tone or stiffness of muscle, which might interfere with movement, speech, or be associated with discomfort or pain. Spasticity is usually caused by damage to nerve pathways within the brain or spinal cord that control muscle movement
  • Spinal Stenosis
A narrowing of the spinal canal. Spinal stenosis can put pressure on the spinal cord and the nerves within the spine. It commonly occurs in the neck and lower back. The condition is often caused by age-related wear and tear.
Symptoms, if they occur, include pain, numbness, muscle weakness, and impaired bladder or bowel control.
  • Tourette’s Syndrome
